Composing Magic

Composing Magic, by Elizabeth Barrette

Composing Magic is at once encouraging, educational and practical. Barrette reassures readers early in the text that “a competently written, heartfelt blessing will serve the purpose” no matter what a writer's skill level might be, and thereby draws an important distinction between professional and personal writing. She goes on to provide readers with a concise history of sacred poetics and offers instruction in poetic techniques and forms, which makes the text a good reference for poets of all stripes. Finally, the examples and exercises supplied in each chapter marry technique to intent, giving readers an opportunity to both absorb and create sacred compositions of various kinds. In brief, Barrette's first book is a worthy read and a worthy reference for anyone seeking to add a more personal dimension to Pagan practice. - C.S. MacCath
